Geocache Description:

Balise de Fourmigue 📍🧭

🇫🇷

Histoire

History

There are four cardinal marks 🧭, and they signal a danger at sea ⚠️. Hazards to navigation 🚤 such as rocks or shipwrecks are marked by these special beacons 📍. They are positioned near the hazard, but their specific configuration including the yellow-and-black color scheme and the arrangement of the two triangles at the top varies depending on the hazard's exact location.

In this case, the mark is positioned to the east of the danger: yellow in the center, black at the ends, and triangles arranged base-to-base. ⚫🟡⚫🔷

Lesson

This marker is anchored to dolomite, also known as dolomitic limestone or magnesian limestone, a sedimentary rock composed of calcium and magnesium carbonate. Traces of salt and a peculiar form of weathering can be found on its surface. This is known as "patina," and it develops on solid rock faces in environments ranging from deserts to seashores.

This weathering process results from a combination of three main factors :

- Over time, seawater erodes the rock, eventually causing cracks to form. It primarily attacks the least durable mineral present in the limestone: calcite. Because the rock contains iron and magnesium oxides, these darker minerals once exposed oxidize and precipitate onto the surface.

- Human-induced factors also play a role; particles of dirt and pollution can adhere to the rock.

- Finally, slightly acidic rainfall dissolves the limestone's carbonate, causing a crust to precipitate in the form of a gypsum gel. Over time, this hardens, resulting in the appearance of a dark patina.

Questions :

1 - What is the color of this alteration ? (see the red area in the spoiler photo).
2 - Based on your observations, where exactly are these alterations primarily located ?
3 - Which oxides present in this limestone are responsible for this darkening ?
4 - Take a photo of yourself or your username at the marker.
