Geocache Description:

Les mardelles de Silvange

DEFINITION

FORMATION

THE MARDELLES

DEFINITION

A mardelle is a closed basin, a few meters to several tens of meters in diameter, with a depth generally varying between 1 and 5 meters.

It is frequently filled with water, either permanently or temporarily.

It is found particularly in Lorraine.

FORMATION

Several hypotheses have been proposed so far.

Karst dissolution: The collapse of underground limestone can lead to subsidence of the ground. This produces depressions similar to sinkholes.

This hypothesis does not explain all the mardelles in Lorraine.

Periglacial hypothesis: The presence of ice lenses in the frozen ground, which subsequently melt, resulting in localized compaction of the sediments. This creates a closed basin.

Silt removal hypothesis: Water infiltrates the soil, carrying away fine particles. The silt and clay then migrate towards fissures or deeper horizons. This leads to soil compaction and the formation of a cavity.

This explanation is often used for many sinkholes in Lorraine.

Anthropogenic hypothesis: This would correspond to the human impact on the environment: Sites of former clay, marl, or other material extraction (massive deforestation). However, it is far from explaining all sinkholes.

CURRENT HYPOTHESIS

A 2021 study on the sinkholes of Lorraine reveals a mixed hypothesis combining the silt extraction hypothesis, the karst hypothesis, and an anthropogenic hypothesis.
The weathering of the Keuper marls and the formation of conduits due to the deformations affecting them (fracturing and folding) will cause the extraction of residual particles.
The karst origin involved in the formation of closed depressions in clay soils is a specific characteristic of the Lorraine sinkholes.

The development of intensive agriculture, for its part, has favored the karstogenesis of the Keuper marls, which are rich in salt and gypsum.

QUESTIONS

Question 1: Explain the most commonly accepted hypothesis for the formation of the ponds on the Lorraine plateau.

Question 2: Is it a human's work ?

Question 3: By inspecting the ground at the water's edge, can you see any unusual rocks? If so, determine their average size, shape, and color. Do you think it is limestone?

question 4:  a photo of you (with oor without your head) or you nickname ies required
