#094 National "Cursed Soldiers" Remembrance Day - 1 March

National "Cursed Soldiers" Remembrance Day is a public holiday observed annually on 1 March to commemorate the soldiers of the anti-communist and pro-independence underground who, after the end of the Second World War, continued to fight against the communist system imposed on Poland. The date was chosen to mark the events of 1 March 1951, when seven members of the Fourth Executive Committee of the ‘Freedom and Independence’ Association, led by its chairman Łukasz Ciepliński, were executed at Mokotów Prison in Warsaw.

The initiative to establish the holiday came from the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, who submitted a draft bill to the Sejm. Following his death, the legislative process continued, and the bill was passed on 3 February 2011. It was subsequently signed by President Bronisław Komorowski, enabling the National Day of Remembrance for the ‘Cursed Soldiers’ to be observed for the first time on 1 March 2011.

The main commemorations take place in Warsaw, with the Museum of the Cursed Soldiers and Political Prisoners of the Polish People’s Republic – located in the former prison on Rakowiecka Street – serving as the key venue for the events. A ceremonial changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier also remains a traditional part of the programme.

The tradition of commemoration has undergone gradual changes, taking on a new social dimension over time. The first anniversaries were dominated by official tributes, memorial services and the laying of wreaths at the sites of former executions. Subsequent years, however, saw a marked expansion of the format to include mass participation and educational elements. Since 2013, the nationwide sporting and social project ‘Tropem Wilczym. The Cursed Soldiers’ Memorial Run’ has become a regular feature of the programme, bringing together runners for a 1963-metre race – a reference to the year of the death of the last partisan, Józef Franczak ‘Lalka’.

To get the coordinates, answer the following questions:

1. In which year did the Sejm of the Republic of Poland establish this public holiday by law?

2. State the surname of the chairman of the 4th Central Executive Committee of the Freedom and Independence Association who was executed by firing squad in 1951.

3. Name the street in Warsaw where the Museum of the Cursed Soldiers and Political Prisoners of the Polish People’s Republic is located.

4. How many metres is the distance of the nationwide memorial run organised as part of this holiday?
