Geocache Description:

This EarthCache invites you to come discover the ruins of this Gallo-Roman site, focusing, among other things, on the presence of certain rocks and sediments at the site.

The Gallo-Roman sanctuary at Bilaire, in Vannes, preserves the remains of a fanum (a type of building in the Celtic tradition). The artifacts found at this site date back to the 2nd century B.C. They reflect an effort to assimilate a place that had been revered in the past by developing new religious practices.

It was the Bilaire municipal housing development project that led researchers to conduct a soil survey, given the strong suspicion that archaeological remains existed there. Research conducted by the Regional Archaeology Service led to the discovery of a Gallo-Roman building.

The site is located some 600 meters from the presumed boundaries of the ancient city of Vannes, Darioritum—capital of the Veneti tribe of Armorica (Lyonnaise province)—and approximately 1,200 meters from the forum area. The unearthed remains date to several successive periods of occupation, notably Gallic and Gallo-Roman: from at least the first half of the 2nd century B.C. to the first quarter of the 4th century A.D.

The trenches dug during the excavations revealed a layer of homogeneous black soil (topsoil) covering a bedrock of granite. Of the 3.7 hectares covered by the project, the central portion was not deeply probed, as granite veins surface very frequently in this area.
