Geocache Description:

Quartz in Granite – Kuarci në Granit

Logging Tasks

EN

  1. Observe the granite floor. Describe the colour and appearance of the quartz crystals.
  2. Compare the quartz with the surrounding minerals. Are the quartz grains generally larger, smaller, or about the same size?
  3. Why is quartz usually more resistant to weathering than many other minerals found in granite?
  4. Optional: Take a photo showing one clearly visible quartz crystal within the granite.

AL

  2. Krahasoni kuarcin me mineralet përreth.

Description

EN

Granite is one of the world’s most widely used natural stones and is composed of several minerals that crystallized together from slowly cooling magma. One of the most important of these minerals is quartz.

Quartz commonly appears as light grey, translucent or slightly glassy crystals that fill the spaces between feldspar and dark minerals. Unlike many other minerals, quartz has no preferred cleavage, giving it an irregular, glass-like appearance. On polished granite surfaces these crystals often reflect light differently from the surrounding minerals, making them easier to recognize.

The granite floor at this location provides an excellent opportunity to observe quartz crystals and understand how individual minerals combine to form one of Earth’s most durable rocks.

AL

Geological Background

EN

Quartz is composed entirely of silicon and oxygen (SiO₂) and is one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s continental crust. In granite, quartz crystallizes during the later stages of magma cooling after many feldspar minerals have already formed.

Because granite cools very slowly beneath the Earth’s surface, quartz crystals have enough time to develop into visible grains that interlock with neighbouring minerals. This interlocking texture gives granite its exceptional strength and durability.

Quartz has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, making it considerably more resistant to scratching and weathering than many other common rock-forming minerals. This durability is one reason granite is widely used for pavements, buildings and monuments.

AL

Learning Notes

  • Granite is an intrusive igneous rock.
  • Quartz is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂).
  • Quartz has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale.
  • Quartz crystallizes during the later stages of magma cooling.
  • Interlocking crystals make granite very durable.
