The "Cherry Pit Spit" is a quirky, long-standing Door County tradition born from the region's rich history as the fourth-largest cherry-producing area in the United States. Starting in the 1980s as a fun novelty at the old Fish Creek Winter Games, it quickly became a signature local competition.
Today, the spirit of the pit spit lives on year-round, most famously at Lautenbach's Orchard Country Winery & Market in Fish Creek, where visitors can practice their form on an official course.
The History & Culture of the Spittin' Sport
- Origins: The sport was created to celebrate Door County's tart Montmorency cherry harvest, which has been a staple crop on the peninsula since the late 1800s
- The Technique: The key to a great spit is treating your mouth like a peashooter—curling your tongue, inhaling deeply, and popping the pit out with a tight seal to maximize distance.
