Geocache Description:

Voici 3 différents faciès de meulière.

A. Meulière compacte silexoïde

The Royat Géoscope is a trail laid out within the Thermal Park to showcase the principal rock types found in the Royat and Clermont-Ferrand area, as well as the structure and geological history of the subsoil. It features:

â–ş Explanatory panels made of enameled lava: a geological map, a cross-section, and a schematic aerial view. A chronological chart places major regional events within the context of Earth's history.

â–ş Around twenty very large samples of the main local rock types, some weighing several tonnes. They are categorized by type and arranged chronologically, accompanied by information on their composition, age, mode of formation, potential uses, and origin.

Log on to “Found It” and send me your answers via the geocaching messaging system (Message Center) or via mail. Be sure to indicate the name of the cache! I'll analyze your answers and contact you if I have any problems.

> Questions <

1. Describe the rock in front of you (texture, grain size, colors present...)

2. What process has altered the stone in front of you?

3. Has this process altered the rock over its entire surface?

To validate the Earth you must attach a photo of yourself to your log (it is not necessary to upload a photo of your face) in the vicinity of the stone

You don't need to send me your photo by email, I will contact you if there is any problem.

Any log not accompanied by this photo will be deleted.

> Millstone Grit <

Millstone grit—or simply "millstone"—is a siliceous sedimentary rock that was used until around 1880 to manufacture grain-grinding millstones, hence its name. Only the densest sections of a millstone deposit are suitable for making millstones. It has long served as an excellent building material; indeed, the stone is extremely strong, impervious to rainwater erosion, and waterproof, yet porous (specifically, "cavernous" millstone, riddled with holes like Emmental cheese). This cellular structure provides valuable thermal and acoustic insulation properties.

> What forms of deterioration affect the millstone grit? <

Here are three different facies of *meulière* (millstone rock).

A. Compact, flint-like *meulière*
A very hard, compact, and dense rock. It is often gray to brown in color, resembling flint, with very few visible pores.

B. Porous *meulière* with a tendency towards cavernous structure
A hard rock featuring numerous pores and some larger cavities. It has an irregular texture and is lighter than the compact variety.

C. Cavernous *meulière*
A highly porous rock with large cavities (caverns). It is rough, less compact, and shows evidence of significant material dissolution.
