Geocache Description:

The Royat Géoscope is a trail laid out within the Thermal Park to showcase the principal rock types found in the Royat and Clermont-Ferrand area, as well as the structure and geological history of the subsoil. It features:

â–ş Explanatory panels made of enameled lava: a geological map, a cross-section, and a schematic aerial view. A chronological chart places major regional events within the context of Earth's history.

â–ş Around twenty very large samples of the main local rock types, some weighing several tonnes. They are categorized by type and arranged chronologically, accompanied by information on their composition, age, mode of formation, potential uses, and origin.

> Questions <

1. Describe the rock in front of you (texture, grain size, colors present...).

2. Which mica is most abundant in this rock?

3. Are the rocks in front of you undergoing spheroidal weathering? Why?

To validate the Earth you must attach a photo of yourself to your log (it is not necessary to upload a photo of your face) in the vicinity of the stone

You don't need to send me your photo by email, I will contact you if there is any problem.

Any log not accompanied by this photo will be deleted.

> The Manson Granite <

A light-colored, fine-grained igneous rock occurring in dikes that cut across the Royat granite and diorite. It is composed of quartz, potassium and sodi-calcic feldspars, white mica (muscovite), and black mica (biotite). It originated either from the partial melting of gneiss or as a residual magma from the Royat granite (aplite).

> Why is it altered? <

A major component of the bedrock, the porphyritic granite—known as Theix-Royat granite—is also found along fault lines. This granite and the associated suite of intersecting dikes—Manson granite—represent the final Variscan magmatic events within the proposed site. Although a massive rock, it is naturally dissected by a network of preferential planes known as joints, which facilitate its weathering into rounded boulders. Localized weathering occurs to varying depths depending on the specific location, though it tends to be more pronounced in zones of crushed rock.

At several points within the site—such as Theix and the Boisséjour valley—it appears in the form of rounded boulders. The grus (decomposed granite) that once surrounded these blocks has been completely washed away by runoff, revealing scattered clusters of rounded granite boulders, or tors.
