Geocache Description:

What is the Geoscope?

The Royat Géoscope is a trail laid out within the Thermal Park to showcase the principal rock types found in the Royat and Clermont-Ferrand area, as well as the structure and geological history of the subsoil. It features:

â–ș Explanatory panels made of enameled lava: a geological map, a cross-section, and a schematic aerial view. A chronological chart places major regional events within the context of Earth's history.

â–ș Around twenty very large samples of the main local rock types, some weighing several tonnes. They are categorized by type and arranged chronologically, accompanied by information on their composition, age, mode of formation, potential uses, and origin.

> Questions <

1. Describe the rock in front of you (texture, grain size, colors present...)

2. What do the folds in the rock look like?

3. How many minerals make up the rock in front of you?

To validate the Earth you must attach a photo of yourself to your log (it is not necessary to upload a photo of your face) in the vicinity of the stone

You don't need to send me your photo by email, I will contact you if there is any problem.

Any log not accompanied by this photo will be deleted.

> What is anatexite? <

It is a heterogeneous metamorphic rock containing zones with a granitic appearance and remnants of incompletely melted gneiss. The rock is composed of quartz, feldspars, black mica (biotite), and altered, greenish-colored cordierite. This stone originated from the partial melting of gneiss at a temperature of around 800°C, at a depth of approximately 25 km.

> A few alterations <

Iron oxides formed during the weathering of anatexite can exhibit various colors depending on their mineralogical composition and environmental conditions. Hematite (Fe₂O₃) is responsible for red to reddish-brown hues and typically forms in well-oxygenated environments. Goethite (FeO(OH)) produces yellow to yellowish-brown hues and is more common in humid environments. The presence and proportion of these two minerals account for the different colors observed in the weathering products of anatexite and in the soils derived from it.

> A few folds <

A fold is a deformation of rock caused by intense stress. The most common folds occur in sedimentary rocks, where the strata are originally straight and planar.

A fold consists of a syncline (a trough) or an anticline (an arch). The fold's axis and radius make it possible to estimate the orientation and magnitude of the forces that created it.

There are various types of folds, classified according to their characteristics.

First,
- a structure is called an antiform if the curvature is directed upwards (a hump). Sub-classifications exist depending on whether the sequence is normal (older layers at the bottom) or inverted (younger layers at the bottom).
- and a synform if the curve is directed downwards (a trough). Similarly, the name may vary here based on the orientation of the sequence.

Also, depending on the orientation of the fold axis:
- folds with a vertical axis are called upright folds (or symmetrical folds).
- those with an axis between vertical and 45° are inclined folds (or plis déjetés).
- those with an axis between 45° and horizontal are overturned folds (or plis déversés).
- those with a horizontal axis are recumbent folds (or plis couchés).
- attenuated folds (or plis laminés) are overturned folds in which the layers have been crushed or thinned.
- finally, fault-propagation folds (or plis faille) are folds involving a rupture (fault) in the continuity of the layers.
