> La pierre du Pariou <

Vous voici devant une roche volcanique grise, souvent finement bulleuse, analogue à la pierre de Volvic.
Au microscope on observe des feldspaths calco-sodique (plagioclase) et sodi-potassique, amphibole et pyroxe. L'olivine est rare.
La lave enrichie en silice résultant de la cristalisation fractionnée d'un trachy-basalte dans un réservoir situé dans la croûte.

> L'ancien ou le nouveau ? <

L’ancien Pariou est de nature trachytique et trachy-basaltique. Ces derniers sont noirs et contiennent des phénocristaux de petite taille d’augite, d’anorthite (de type bytownite et labradorite), et d’olivine.
Ce premier cône est prolongé au nord par l’anneau de tuf trachy-andésitique qui a provoqué son oblitération.
Ces projections sont sombres et présentent au microscope de petits cristaux d’andésine et d’hornblende disséminés dans un verre volcanique de couleur brun clair.

Le nouveau Pariou est de nature trachy-andésitique. De couleur gris bleuté, cette roche contient quelques anorthites de type labradorite et hornblendes incluses dans du verre volcanique contenant des microlithes de feldspaths, de pyroxènes et d’olivine. La lave était très riche en gaz comme en témoignent de nombreuses bulles allongées dans le sens du courant.

> The Pariou Stone <

You are standing before a grey volcanic rock—often containing fine vesicles—similar to Volvic stone.
Microscopic examination reveals calcium-sodium (plagioclase) and sodium-potassium feldspars, amphibole, and pyroxene. Olivine is rare.
This silica-enriched lava resulted from the fractional crystallization of a trachybasalt within a crustal magma chamber.

> L'ancien ou le nouveau ? <

The older Pariou is trachytic and trachy-basaltic in composition. The trachy-basaltic rocks are black and contain small phenocrysts of augite, anorthite (specifically bytownite and labradorite varieties), and olivine.
This initial cone extends northward into the trachy-andesitic tuff ring that caused its burial.
These pyroclastic deposits are dark; under the microscope, they reveal small andesine and hornblende crystals scattered within a light-brown volcanic glass.

The newer Pariou is trachy-andesitic in composition. Bluish-grey in color, the rock contains scattered labradorite-type anorthite and hornblende crystals embedded in a volcanic glass matrix that holds microlites of feldspar, pyroxene, and olivine. The lava was highly gas-rich, as evidenced by numerous bubbles elongated in the direction of the flow.
