A. Hematite (iron oxide â FeâOâ)
Hematite is an iron oxide responsible for red, reddish-brown, or purple colors in many rocks. It often forms through the oxidation of iron present in minerals and gives sandstones, limestones, or soils a "rust" hue.
B. Goethite / Limonite (iron oxides and hydroxides)
These iron oxides impart yellow, ochre, orange, or brown colors to rocks. They often appear during the weathering of iron-rich minerals upon contact with water and air.
C. Manganese oxide (primarily MnOâ)
Manganese oxides produce black to dark gray hues. They sometimes form small dendritic traces (branch-like patterns) on the surfaces of limestone or decorative stones.
D. Chromium oxide (CrâOâ)
Chromium oxide is responsible for intense green colors in certain rocks. It is notably present in minerals such as chromite and can color chromium-rich metamorphic rocks.
E. Copper oxides (malachite and other copper-bearing minerals)
Copper oxides and carbonates impart green or blue-green colors to rocks. They often appear in areas where copper ores are weathering upon contact with water and oxygen.
