About Cascades MAX Station

Welcome to Cascades MAX Station — one of only four stations served exclusively by Portland’s Red Line to the airport. Every other Red Line stop is shared with the Blue Line, but this one is part of the dedicated Airport MAX branch that splits from the main line at Gateway.
When the Red Line opened on September 10, 2001 — just one day before the events that would reshape aviation worldwide — Cascades Station wasn’t ready for passengers. At the time, the surrounding area was little more than newly paved streets and empty fields. No shops, no restaurants.
Even though trains passed through, they didn’t stop. Due to signal requirements, MAX operators would briefly pause at the unopened platforms, doors firmly closed, before continuing on to the airport. Cascades Station finally opened to the public in January 2007.
The Airport MAX project itself was a unique public‑private partnership between Bechtel, the Port of Portland, and local governments. Bechtel sought to develop the land near the airport, and the Red Line became a key part of that vision. Development slowed significantly after 9/11, but over time the area grew into what we know today as Cascade Station — a busy district filled with shops, restaurants, hotels, and one very famous Swedish furniture store.
Enjoy exploring this modern transit hub and the vibrant neighborhood that grew up around it.
