High above the Adriatic Sea, perched on a 378-metre cliff on the island of Cres, stands the ancient stone village of Lubenice. A place where history, legend and nature meet in a breathtaking setting.
Archaeological evidence suggests that people have lived here for more than 4,000 years, making Lubenice one of the oldest settlements in the Adriatic.
Some historians link Lubenice to the Roman settlement of Hibernicia, a name believed to refer to the harsh winds and cold winters that once shaped life on this exposed cliff-top. For centuries, this strategic position allowed its inhabitants to watch over the sea routes of the Kvarner Gulf.
Today, time seems to move a little slower here. Behind ancient stone gates and along narrow winding streets lives a community of only a handful of permanent residents. Yet this tiny village is home to an astonishing nine churches, silent witnesses to a surprisingly rich and vibrant past.
The wind still carries old stories across the cliffs. Griffon vultures soar above the coastline, the Adriatic changes colour with every passing cloud, and the scent of wild sage and rosemary drifts through the air. It is no surprise that Lubenice is considered one of the most spectacular viewpoints on Cres.
