Welcome to a place where history spans millennia!
This traditional cache brings you to the hilltop just above the tourist settlement of Zaglav, a site known as sv. Krstipul (St. Christopher). This spot offers not only breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea but also a fascinating glimpse into the island's ancient past.
A Touch of History:
- The Bronze Age Hillfort: Long before the church was built, this hilltop was a large Bronze Age hillfort surrounded by massive dry stone walls. It is believed to have been the place of worship for the very first inhabitants of this area.
- The Romanesque Church: Around the year 1200, the foundations of the hillfort were used to build a Romanesque church dedicated to St. Christopher.
- The Gothic Transformation: In the 15th century, the church underwent a unique renovation. New walls were built inside the original ones to support a pointed Gothic vault. This architectural choice narrowed the already small church to a width of just 3 meters!
Today, it remains a peaceful, atmospheric, and windy spot, perfect for a short break and some historical exploration away from the beach.
