Geocache Description:

Ljubljansko barje - Rakova jelša

Ljubljansko barje meri 163 km2, oziroma 0,9 % slovenskega ozemlja.

Ljubljana Marshes

The Ljubljana Marshes measure 163 km2 or 0.9% of Slovenia's territory. With annual floods, the flooded area of the area is up to 80 km2.

From a geological point of view, it is a more than 200 m deep Late Pliocene depression from two million years ago, formed at the junction of the Alpine and Dinaric worlds.

Fauna

The Great Woodpecker (Numenius arquata) weaves its nest on the ground, in a swampy meadow. When the female hatches eggs, she sits motionless on the nest in the tall grass, relying on her protective color. At that time, it is fatal for her if she is found by a dog that is running freely on the Marsh.

The blackbird is a species of meadow bird and is the only globally endangered species that nests in the Ljubljana Marshes. Ten years ago, another globally endangered bird species, the southern post-warbler, nested on the marsh, but it is no longer there today.

Although the Ljubljana Marshes comprise only one percent of the total area of Slovenia, up to 20 percent of the population of some species of meadow birds is home to it due to the exceptionality of its habitats. Among them, the great shearwater, whose ten pairs on the Marshes represent the only permanent Slovenian nesting population, while other species are also represented with a significant share: quail, priba, field lark, reed warbler, marsh reed warbler, postovka. The Ljubljana Marshes also contain some endangered species of forest birds and marsh birds, a total of 107 species of regular and occasional nesting birds, and at the same time this area is important for wintering and migratory flights of many other bird species.

On the Ljubljana Marshes, we can find an endangered moisture-loving population of the marsh okarček. The latter lives nowhere else. It is being repopulated in Iž morost.

About 45 species of mammals live in the wider area of the Ljubljana Marshes, and among the most endangered is the otter, which can occasionally be found along the Ljubljanica and Iščica rivers. An important member of the marsh ecosystem are numerous voles that live exclusively in meadows. A swamp bowl turtle adapted to the swamp world has become very rare. Amphibians (green rega, urh, brown and green frogs) and invertebrates are still abundant on the marsh, which is also one of the reasons for the diversity and abundance of birds.

Rakova Jelša

The name Crab alder comes from the fact that in the mentioned area there is a presence of alder in such quantities that it poisons the soil and therefore causes cancer to other plant and animal species. Therefore, life in such an area is difficult for ordinary people. In the seventies, the area was first called Rakasta alder, but over the years the name was transformed into Rakova alder in the folk circles of the local population. Rakova alder is the only neighbourhood in Ljubljana with a majority non-Slovenian population. It was created by the immigration of the population from the area of the former Yugoslavia from the seventies onwards. The process of immigration of the population from the former Yugoslavia to Slovenia and Ljubljana and the emergence of ethnic quarters such as Rakova alder is interesting from the socio-economic point of view of the characteristics of the population. The survey of the local population also reveals satisfaction with the quality of the living environment, but at the same time indicates the problem of integrating immigrants into the new environment.

AVANTURA

Avantura se začne pred mostom čez potok Curnovec. Tam parkirajte vozilo in prečkajte most ter se napotite južno, direktno proti Krimu. Na prvem križišču zavijte desno in sledite cesto do vmesne točke (tripod, na cca. 1.5 m višine). Na njej poiščite vsebnik z navodili, kako do zaključne lokacije z lettterbox-om. Leterbox  se nahaja cca 75 m stran.

V leterbox-u je PVC zabojnik s klik pokrovom, dnevnik – log book, pisalo in štampiljka z zelenim odtisom ljubljanskega zmajčka, zaščitnim simbolom Ljubljane.

ENG

The adventure begins in front of the bridge over the Curnovec stream. Park your vehicle there and cross the bridge and head south, directly towards Crimea. At the first intersection, turn right and follow the road to the intermediate point (tripod, app. 1.5 m high). On it, find a container with instructions on how to get to the final location with the lettterbox. Leterbox is located approx. 75 meters away.

In the leterbox there is a PVC container with a click lid, a log book, a pen and a stamp with the green print of the Ljubljana dragon, the trademark of Ljubljana. There is also enough space in the container to store a small tracker.

Go for the treasure prepared, appropriately shod and dressed. Especially in summer, when the vegetation is lush, it is necessary to protect yourself from nettles and blackberries and annoying mosquitoes, which are everywhere in these parts.

I kindly ask you to fold everything neatly after finding it and return it to the place you found it.
