About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More information can be found at the SideTracked Website.

Hawthorn station

Hawthorn is a railway station on the Alamein, Belgrave and Lilydale lines, as part of the Melbourne rail network. It serves the eastern suburb of the same name, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Hawthorn opened on 13 April 1861 when the railway line from Pic-Nic station was extended across the Yarra River. When it opened, Hawthorn was a terminus, with a single platform, which is the current Platform 1. In 1882, after the line was extended to Camberwell, an additional platform was constructed. In 1890, an island platform was provided to accommodate the newly opened branch line to Kew, using a canopy from the original Flinders Street station.

In 1963, a third track was provided between Hawthorn and Camberwell, which was extended across the Yarra River to Burnley in 1972. The third track allows bi-directional running on the middle track for express services during peak hour. The station was added to the Victorian Heritage Register on 20 August 1982 in recognition of its historical significance.

The cache

From the Platform 1 exit on Evansdale Rd, take the small path heading south-west alongside the station buildings. This path runs beside the train tracks all the way to Yarra St, but we will be stopping at the tunnel entrance, where pedestrians and cyclists can cross the tracks. At GZ you will be looking for a 750ml cylindrical container, tucked away out of sight from passers-by. Use stealth when retrieving the cache - you may attract some odd looks. Also, please take appropriate caution, as the path to the cache will be slippery when wet!

Information about Hawthorn station taken from Wikipedia. I acknowledge that this cache is placed on the Traditional Lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation and pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
