Geocache Description:

  • les plantes , adaptées au sel, se trouvent près du littoral ;

English version

🌎 Welcome to this beautiful part of the country!

The shoreline of Saint‑Fulgence is a unique environment in the Saguenay–Lac‑Saint‑Jean region. It serves as an important migratory stopover for thousands of Canada geese, snow geese, and many other species. This exceptional site exists because of the geology that shapes the battures and influences the dynamics of the fjord.

🧊 Why do birds gather here?

The migratory stopover at Saint‑Fulgence is directly linked to three major geological phenomena:

1. The battures: an intertidal plain formed by glacial deposits

After the last glaciation, the Laflamme Sea deposited:

  • clay

  • silt

  • fine sediments

These materials created a vast plain that becomes exposed at low tide: the battures.

2. The Saguenay Fjord

The fjord, carved by a glacier up to 2 km thick, features:

  • steep cliffs

  • a wide valley floor

  • a unique tidal dynamic

This geomorphology creates a nutrient‑rich environment, ideal for migratory birds.

3. A transition zone between sea and land

The battures are low, clay‑rich lands influenced daily by the tides. The influx of saltwater plays an essential role in the distribution of vegetation:

  • halophytic plants, adapted to salt, grow near the shoreline;

  • wetland plants colonize the upper levels of the micro‑cliffs.

👉 Geology has created the perfect habitat for migratory birds.

📝 Questions to log this EarthCache

Send your answers through the Geocaching message center.

1. Describe the materials visible on the battures. Clay? Silt? Sand? Gravel? Rock?

2. Observe the surface of the ground. Is it smooth, cracked, striated, or shaped by the tides?

3.Which plants are adapted to the presence of salt and are found near the shoreline? (Answer available on an interpretation panel on site.)”

4. Explain why this location has become a migratory stopover. Base your answer on geology, not biology.

📸 45 Photo Take a photo of yourself or an object representing you at the posted coordinates.

🙌

Thank you for visiting this EarthCache and discovering the battures of Saint‑Fulgence, a place where glacial geology meets the power of the tides.
