Εξετάστε την περιοχή που έχει σημειωθεί με πράσινο. Περιγράψτε το πάχος, τις αποστάσεις και την πορεία των ορατών στρώσεων. Είναι ευθείες, κυματοειδείς ή έντονα καμπυλωμένες; Πώς μεταβάλλεται η κλίση τους μέσα στην περιοχή;

Logging requirements
Send your answers via my profile/message center. You may log immediately afterwards. If anything is missing, I will contact you.
The three areas
The green, purple and red areas show different parts of the rock sequence. On site, you should investigate where the original bedding is still well preserved, where the rock has been particularly strongly fractured, and where more massive limestone bodies occur.
At this remote bay, the internal structure of a limestone cliff is especially well exposed. In the image below, three investigation areas are marked in different colors. The structures inside the marked areas have deliberately been obscured so that they can only be examined on site.

Tasks
Task 1 – Evidence of deposition
Examine the area marked in green. Describe the thickness, spacing and course of the visible layers. Are they straight, wavy or strongly curved? How does their inclination change within the area?
Explain which features indicate that the rock was originally deposited in several successive sediment layers on a seafloor.
Task 2 – Bedding and fracturing
Compare the green area with the purple area. Describe how clearly the bedding can be recognized in each area, what shapes the individual rock bodies have, and how frequently cracks or joints occur.
Which area is more strongly tectonically shattered? Support your answer with at least two observations.
Task 3 – Reconstruction of the tectonic development
Compare all three colored areas and assign each of them one of the following descriptions:
- clearly recognizable, deformed package of beds,
- strongly fractured transition zone,
- more massive rock body cut by larger joints.
Explain your classification and then describe how originally almost horizontal marine deposits could have developed into the folded and fractured cliff visible today.
Task 4 – Photo
Add a photo to your log showing yourself, your GPS device or a personal item with the bay or cliff in the background. The answers to the tasks should not be clearly visible in the photo.
Bedding and tectonics
The cliff in front of you records two major stages of its geological development. First, carbonate-rich sediments were deposited in a marine environment. Later, the already lithified rock layers were tilted, folded and fractured by tectonic forces.
From the seafloor to limestone
Geologically, Corfu belongs to the outer parts of the Hellenides. Both the Ionian and the Pre-Apulian geotectonic zones occur on the island. Along the west coast, narrow occurrences of older limestone are exposed, while other parts of Corfu are characterized by younger marine deposits.
The original material of the cliff accumulated on an ancient seafloor. It consisted of fine calcareous mud and calcareous remains of marine organisms. Deposition took place gradually. Changes in currents, water depth and the supply of carbonate or clay produced sediment layers of different thicknesses.
Under the weight of younger deposits, the sediments were compacted. Pore water was expelled and calcium carbonate bound the individual components together. In this way, the soft sediment was transformed into solid limestone. The boundaries between individual phases of deposition were preserved as bedding surfaces.
Sediments are generally deposited approximately horizontally. The steep, curved and variably inclined layers visible today therefore formed only after the rock had become consolidated.
The Ionian Zone forms part of the fold-and-thrust belt of the Outer Hellenides. Former marine basins were compressed and tectonically deformed during later mountain building. The sedimentary sequences were folded, transported along thrust faults and cut by fractures.
Under higher pressure and elevated temperature, limestone could initially deform slowly without breaking. This type of deformation is called ductile deformation. Closer to the Earth's surface, the rock reacted increasingly in a brittle way. Joints, fracture surfaces and strongly shattered zones developed.
Thinner or more clay-rich layers could be folded or displaced against one another more easily. Thicker and more resistant limestone beds behaved more like coherent rock bodies and broke into larger blocks. This is why very different structures can occur side by side within a single cliff.

Logbedingungen

- gut erkennbares, verformtes Schichtpaket,
