This is the latest of my caches named for family members. This one is for ChevyGirl's husband, my beloved son-in-law. From the first time I saw him, I thought he looked wolfish, with his sharp canines and piercing, level gaze. And to top it off, he's also constantly killing all manner of game animals, so that fits too! Here's to you, Mountain Wolf - an appropriately difficult cache!
No two ways about it - this is a tough hike. You probably shouldn't bring a dog (I did); definitely tell someone where you are going (I didn't); and you probably shouldn't attempt it if you're over 60 (I am).
The best parking area, as with all these caches, is the second swithback below Summit Lake, and what you're aiming for is the pass high above the drainage to the east of Marmot Towers. (What do you mean, what the heck is Marmot Towers? If you don't know what Marmot Towers is, you probably should get some of the closer caches in the area and become familiar with the landmarks. There are no trails out here once you get past the first little bit, so you want to know the most visible features.) If you shoot straight for Marmot Towers, there's a great crossing spot at N 61 45.503 W 149 20.251 in case Paradise Creek is running high and you don't want to get your boots wet. Once you're in the drainage beside Marmot Towers, look up at the high ridge and ask yourself again if you want to do this. Assuming you do, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the Valley, up toward the Matanuska Glacier, a great view of the Knik Glacier , all the way out to the inlet, and northwest toward The Great One. Feast your eyes! Then come slowly and methodically down the scree field. I don't want to hear of any cachers having to be rescued from one of those insane Ha'Tsi caches!
