The year was 1923. ........ Glen William Bell Jr. was born in Lynwood, California. His Depression childhood was spent riding freight trains and selling blackberry pies door to door under the name "Mrs. Dye's Homemade Pies." He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943 and was assigned as a cook in the Pacific theater. The Marine Corps galley taught him portioning, cleanliness, speed, and the operational discipline that no civilian culinary education could have produced.

In 1948, a twenty-five-year-old Marine veteran named Glen Bell opened a hot dog stand on Mount Vernon Avenue in San Bernardino, California, and noticed a Mexican restaurant across the street with a line wrapping around the building every night. The restaurant was Mitla Cafe. The recipe was a hard-shell taco invented by a Jalisco immigrant named Lucia Rodriguez. Glen Bell ate there for years.

Mitla Cafe had opened in 1937. Lucia Rodriguez had developed a hard-shell taco — tacos dorados — adapted from the Lenten potato-stuffed tacos of her Jalisco childhood, refilled with ground beef, cheddar, lettuce, and tomato. Customers, including César Chávez, lined up nightly.

Bell ate at Mitla for years, befriended the family, and persuaded their head chef Gloria Hoyle to teach him the technique. He fashioned his own fry basket and added tacos to his hamburger menu. His first taco customer said: "That was good, gimme another."

It took Bell fourteen years to land on the formula. He opened Taco Tia in 1954 selling hard-shell tacos for nineteen cents. He opened El Taco with different partners. He sold his interest, took the proceeds, and resolved to build something entirely under his own control.

On July 6, 1962, the first Taco Bell opened at 7112 Firestone Boulevard in Downey — a 400-square-foot mission-style building roughly the size of a two-car garage. The original menu: tacos, burritos, tostadas, Chiliburgers, and frijoles, all priced at nineteen cents.

The first Taco Bell was funded by forty shares at one hundred dollars each, held mostly by Bell's family. The first franchise opened in Torrance in 1964. The hundredth location opened in Anaheim in 1967.
