The New Course
The storm had passed, but its scars remained.
The Lady Eleanor would never sail quite the same until she reached a proper dockyard. Her mainmast had been lost to the tempest, replaced now by a stout jury rig fashioned from spare spars, heavy timbers, and the ingenuity of exhausted sailors. It was far from elegant, but it would carry them safely enough if treated with respect.
Captain Elias Mercer stood over the chart spread across the cabin table. The familiar coastline offered reassurance, yet every decision now demanded greater care. A damaged ship could not simply follow the quickest route. She must avoid strong currents, dangerous shoals, and the open sea whenever prudence allowed.
The First Mate waited quietly as Mercer measured the chart.
"We no longer sail the course we intended," the Captain said, drawing a fresh line across the map. "A wise captain never argues with the sea. He listens, adjusts his plans, and makes the best of what remains."
The old course was struck through with a single line. A new one was carefully plotted.
The helmsman was summoned.
"Steady now," Mercer ordered. "Bring her gently onto the new bearing. We shall make for Port Jackson by the safest water we can find."
The wheel turned slowly. The patched sails filled. And once more, the Lady Eleanor pointed her bow toward home.
