Fair Winds

The morning breeze freshened steadily, filling the patched sails of the Lady Eleanor with welcome strength. After days of battling wind and sea, the weary brig was once again making good progress.

Captain Elias Mercer watched the canvas draw tight before turning to Mr Wilson.
"A fair wind is a gift," he said quietly, "but only to those who know how to use it. A wise sailor trims his sails to the wind he has, not the wind he wishes for."

Wilson nodded and opened his navigation notebook.

Throughout the afternoon he gathered the younger hands around the mainmast, explaining the principal points of sail and how each affected the ship's speed and handling. Every sailor, he reminded them, should recognise the wind's direction instinctively, for a moment's hesitation could cost valuable time—or even the ship herself.

By sunset the Lady Eleanor was running freely before a steady breeze, her bow pointed confidently toward home.
