The Navigation Error
The Lady Eleanor has resumed her voyage. The seas are calm, and the crew's confidence has returned. During the morning watch, Captain Mercer decides to test the navigation skills of his senior officers.
Using the ship's chronometer reading, each officer is asked to calculate the vessel's longitude independently before the noon position is entered into the ship's log. The (corrected) chronometer reading is 10:21:58.
When the completed worksheets are handed to Mr Wallace, the ship's Navigator, one calculation immediately catches his eye.
He studies the page for a moment before approaching the Captain.
"Captain... I believe one of the officers has made a mistake."
Mercer studies the worksheet, nods, and smiles.
"Well spotted, Mr Wallace. A navigator never trusts a calculation until he has checked it himself. One careless error can put a ship many miles off her true course."
The incorrect worksheet is set aside, corrected, and the ship's true longitude is entered into the log.
