The Whale Song

For several days the Lady Eleanor has sailed through calm seas. One morning, the lookout calls excitedly from the masthead.
"Whales to starboard!"

A small pod of humpback whales surfaces beside the ship, rising and falling with effortless grace. Their great breaths drift skyward before they disappear beneath the waves once more.

The crew fall silent as the giants accompany the Lady Eleanor for several miles.

Then a deep, haunting call echoes across the water.
Another answers from somewhere beyond the horizon.

Mr Wallace pauses to listen.
"They are singing to one another, Captain."
Mercer smiles.
"Aye. Their songs have crossed these oceans for longer than any sailor has sailed them. Though we do not understand their language, we can still respect it."

The whales gradually disappear into the deep, leaving only the memory of their haunting song upon the morning sea.
