Legends of the Deep

Night settles over the Lady Eleanor. The sea is calm, and only the gentle creak of timber and the splash of water against the hull disturb the silence.
With Captain Mercer below preparing tomorrow's course, the men of the middle watch gather near the galley lantern.
As always, someone begins a sea story.

"I'll swear on my mother's grave," says old Tom Briggs, "I saw a serpent longer than this ship off Cape Horn!"
"Nonsense," laughs another sailor. "That was nothing more than a line of porpoises."
"But what about the mermaid that sang to the Endeavour?"
"And the Kraken that dragged ships beneath the waves?"
"Or the Ghost Cook walking on water back to his ship after forgetting his ladle?"

Before long the deck is alive with stories of monsters, ghost ships and mysterious lights upon the sea.

Captain Mercer quietly emerges from his cabin, listening for a moment before smiling.
"Gentlemen," he says, "every sailor should know the old tales—they make long voyages shorter."
He pauses before adding,
"But when you navigate a ship... trust your compass, your charts... and your eyes."

The men nod.  The stories continue.  Everyone enjoys them.  No one mistakes them for truth.

Old Tom finishing the evening with:
"Mind you, lads... I don't believe a word of these stories."
A pause.
"...except the one about the cook."
