Les couleurs du granite 🩶 🩷 ❤️🤍 💛 🧡 🖤

🇫🇷

🇬🇧
The Ese stream forms after Lake Prunelli. Like many rivers in Corsica, its bed is rich in granite, and—as an added bonus—it’s a fantastic spot for swimming 😍
Questions : Once standing on the rock (as shown in the spoiler photo), observe and answer the following :
1 - Based on your observations, what are the color and the speckling/glitter effect of each of the zones marked in blue, red, and green on the spoiler photo ?
2 - For each zone, explain the reason for these colorations.
3 - Based on how they feel to the touch, rank these 3 zones from the coarsest (grainiest) to the smoothest.
4 - Take a photo of yourself or an object representing you (without revealing the answer/spoiler).

Lesson :
First of all, granite is an igneous rock formed by the slow cooling of magma.
Its overall color is a blend of its constituent crystals:
- Quartz: often gray, transparent, or white.
- Feldspar: provides the dominant hue—white, gray, pink, red, yellow, or orange.
- Mica: adds black specks.
Origin of the colors:
- Pink granite 🩷: Its color comes from a high concentration of potassium feldspar, tinted by small iron oxide inclusions.
- Gray granite 🩶: This color dominates when the feldspars are white or gray, mixed with quartz and mica.
- White granite 🤍: It consists mainly of quartz and white feldspars, with few dark minerals.
- Black granite 🖤: It contains less quartz and light-colored feldspar and a large amount of dark minerals (biotite, amphibole, or pyroxene).
- Yellow granite 💛: This is a fascinating phenomenon caused by weathering and the oxidation of iron by water. It is not the original color but the result of a transformation process. Since granite contains biotite (a type of mica), it is rich in iron; when water seeps into micro-fissures, it attacks the biotite—creating a form of "geological rust" known as goethite or limonite (pigments that stain the granite yellow).
Appearance:
The deeper the granite lies in a riverbed, the smoother it is. The higher up it is found, the more granular its texture.
Happy geocaching, everyone! 😎
