🪨 Description géologique

Quelles couleurs vois‑tu (gris, brun, rouge, blanc…) ?
Propose une explication : oxydation, humidité, lichens, composition minérale, altération.
📸 Photo obligatoire

HOW TO VALIDATE THIS EARTHCACHE?
There is no container to find and no logbook to sign, because this is an EarthCache! You simply need to visit the location and answer the questions below.
You can log your visit as “Found it” and send me your answers at the same time via my Geocaching profile, either by email or through the Geocaching.com messaging system. If there are any issues, I will contact you.
Logs submitted without answers will be deleted, as will photos showing elements that directly reveal the answers.

🪨 Geological Description
This rocky outcrop is located in the area of Saint-Germain-sur-Ay, on the western coast of the Cotentin Peninsula. The region lies within the Armorican Massif, which is composed of ancient sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
The visible outcrops here show:
- Sedimentary layers: successive deposits that have been compacted.
- Vertical and oblique fractures: caused by ancient tectonic stresses.
- Color variations: grey, brown, red and white, related to weathering.
- Friable areas: resulting from erosion, the oceanic climate and freeze-thaw cycles.
The coastline of the Cotentin Peninsula is strongly affected by marine erosion, wind, moisture and seasonal cycles, which enhance the weathering processes visible on this outcrop.
🎯 EarthCache Objective
Observe the rock, identify the visible geological structures and understand the processes that have shaped this coastal outcrop.
📚 Sources and Documentation
This geological background information comes from publicly available sources. It is not necessary to use these sources to answer the questions, but they may help you better understand the geological features of the outcrop.
Regional Geological Context
The Saint-Germain-sur-Ay area belongs to the Armorican Massif, which consists of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks formed several hundred million years ago.
The visible layers correspond to successive compacted deposits, while the vertical and oblique fractures are related to Hercynian tectonic stresses.

Weathering and Rock Colors
The color variations observed — grey, brown, red and white — are typical of several processes:
- Grey: sedimentary rock such as sandstone or shale.
- Brown / beige: surface weathering.
- Reddish: iron oxidation.
- White: lichens or mineral deposits.

❓ Questions for EarthCache Validation
1️⃣ The Layers
How many distinct layers can you identify, and how are they oriented — horizontal, inclined or deformed?
2️⃣ The Fractures
Observe the cracks and fractures in the rock. Are they vertical, oblique or horizontal?
In your opinion, are these fractures caused by:
A) Tectonic activity
B) Erosion
C) Freeze-thaw weathering
3️⃣ The Colors
What colors can you see — grey, brown, red, white, etc.?
Suggest an explanation for these colors: oxidation, moisture, lichens, mineral composition, weathering, etc.
📸 Mandatory Photo
Please add a photo of yourself or a personal item in front of the outcrop. Your face does not have to be visible.
