Geocache Description:

Granite at Bishkek Baatyr

At Bishkek Baatyr, natural reddish-brown granite is used for parts of the monument's base. The polished surface makes the individual mineral grains—typically feldspar, quartz, and dark mica—particularly easy to see.

Granite is an igneous rock that forms when molten rock cools and solidifies deep beneath the Earth's surface. Because the cooling takes place slowly, the minerals have enough time to form visible crystals. These crystals grow together and form the characteristic coarse-grained texture of granite.

If you look closely at the stone, you can see mineral grains of different colours and sizes. The individual grains are not all identical: some are light-coloured, such as feldspar and quartz, while others are darker, such as mica. Their sizes and shapes also vary. The distribution of these minerals gives the granite its characteristic overall appearance.

The size of the visible crystals is also a geological clue. Large, clearly recognisable crystals indicate that the magma did not cool rapidly at the Earth's surface. Instead, the rock remained underground long enough for the crystals to grow.

At this location, you can therefore investigate the granite directly: look at the individual grains, compare their sizes and colours, and consider what these features tell you about the conditions under which the rock formed.

The granite can be examined on the base of the Bishkek Baatyr monument. Choose a clean, easily accessible section of the polished stone and examine it closely. Please stay on the safe, paved area and do not climb onto the monument.

Logging this EarthCache

To log this EarthCache, please answer the following questions and send me your answers (Email or Messagecenter):

  1. Look closely at the granite: what different colours of mineral grains can you identify, and which typical granite minerals might they represent?
  2. Estimate the size of the largest clearly visible mineral grain and describe its shape in your own words.
  3. Compare two areas of the granite: which minerals appear more abundant in one area than in the other, and what does this tell you about the variation in its mineral composition?
  4. The granite contains clearly visible, interlocking crystals: what does their size tell you about how and where the rock cooled?
  5. Take a photo of yourself at the Bishkek Baatyr monument and include it with your log.

Please send me your answers before logging. You do not need to wait for my permission to log your visit. I will contact you if there are any problems with your answers.
