INCIDENT REPORT: THE ARECIBO ANOMALY
Classified Intercept // Surrey Ground Station // 03:00 Hours
It began as a whisper in the noise floor. In the early hours of the morning, an automated radio astronomy array picked up a repeating, uncatalogued telemetry burst. The analyst on duty initially dismissed it as cosmic background radiation, but the signal was too structured. It was a distress beacon from a decaying orbit, crying out in the dark.
With all seven variables extracted from the noise, the analyst fed the data into the targeting matrix to predict the terrestrial crash site.
[ PART I: THE SPECTROGRAM CARRIER ]
The first layer of the transmission was an audio carrier wave. To the naked ear, it sounded like nothing but a rush of violent static.
But the analyst knew better than to just listen. By feeding the audio into a frequency spectrum visualizer, a single hidden word materialized in the shape of the soundwaves. By taking the standard alphabetical sum of that word (where A=1, B=2...), he established the Vanguard identifier, logging it into the terminal as Variable V.
[ PART II: ORBITAL MECHANICS ]
Peeling back the audio revealed the craft's orbital mechanics. The telemetry painted a picture of a highly elliptical parking orbit before an interstellar burn. The craft had swung wildly, registering the following altitudes:
- Apoapsis (ra) = 42,000 km
- Periapsis (rp) = 8,000 km
The tracking computer immediately computed the geometry of this ellipse. The semi-major axis, measured in thousands of kilometers, formed the Alpha parameter (Variable A). The orbital eccentricity, scaled up by a factor of exactly 100, locked in the Epsilon parameter (Variable E).
[ PART III: RELATIVISTIC TIME DILATION ]
But then the Doppler shift data came through, and the analyst froze. The transmission wasn't local. The beacon was receding from Earth at a constant relativistic velocity of 0.8c (80% the speed of light).
Embedded deep in the header was the craft's Mission Elapsed Time: its internal atomic clock reported that exactly 10.80 years of proper time had passed since launch. The analyst grabbed a notepad, realizing that due to time dilation, the stationary observer back on Earth had aged significantly more. The true elapsed Earth time, in years, became the Kinematic lock (Variable K).
[ PART IV: THE TELEMETRY FRAME ]
Buried beneath the relativistic timestamps, a single MAVLink v1 protocol frame survived the journey through the void. The raw hexadecimal dump read:
> PACKET_RECOVERED: FE 02 4A 01 01 18 2A 00 5C 8D
The analyst bypassed the header and checksum, isolating the decimal value of the Message ID to define Variable I, and extracting the decimal value of the two-byte Payload to define Variable M.
[ PART V: THE COSMIC RAY UPSET ]
The final puzzle piece was a radiation-corrupted data block. The satellite had protected its critical mission state using a standard Even Parity Hamming(7,4) error-correcting code, transmitting the following block:
1 0 1 1 0 1 1
(Indexed 1 through 7, from left to right)
A cosmic ray strike had flipped a single bit during transmission. By calculating the error syndrome using the parity bits at the powers of two, the analyst pinpointed the exact position index (1-7) of the corrupted bit, designating it as the Fault index (Variable F).
