Light Exposes Nature's Individual Nuances
The Monument to Lenin in Bishkek was erected in 1984 and originally stood on Ala-Too Square. In 2003, the monument was moved to its present location behind the State Historical Museum, where it still stands today.
The bronze statue rests on a high pedestal clad with polished red granite. At first glance, the stone may appear to be a fairly uniform dark reddish-brown surface, but a closer look reveals considerably more detail.
Granite is an igneous rock that forms when magma cools and solidifies slowly beneath the Earth's surface. It consists of several minerals that crystallise and grow together, commonly including feldspar, quartz and mica. Because these minerals have different colours, sizes and distributions, granite does not necessarily look the same everywhere.
A polished surface makes these variations easier to observe. The reddish colour of this granite is related mainly to its mineral composition, while darker and lighter mineral grains produce the mottled appearance visible across the slabs.
The individual slabs are cut sections of the natural rock. Each cut exposes a slightly different arrangement of minerals, so neighbouring slabs can show different colours, patterns and textures even though they are made from the same type of granite.
This is what makes natural stone interesting: every exposed surface represents a particular part of the original rock and therefore has its own appearance.
Finding the granite
The granite can be examined directly on the pedestal of the Lenin Monument. Walk around the monument and choose several easily accessible slabs for comparison. The polished surfaces are the observation point for this EarthCache.
Please remain on the accessible paths and do not climb onto the monument.
Logging this EarthCache
To log this EarthCache, please answer the following questions and send me your answers (Email or Messagecenter):
- Examine two neighbouring slabs. Which light and dark mineral grains can you distinguish, and which typical granite minerals might they represent?
- Look closely at the visible crystals. Are they mostly fine-, medium-, or coarse-grained, and what does their size tell you about how the magma cooled?
- Are the light and dark minerals evenly distributed, or are some areas richer in one than the other? What does this tell you about the composition of the granite?
- Why can two neighbouring slabs show noticeably different colours and mineral patterns even though both are cut from the same type of granite?
- Take a photo of yourself at the monument and include it with your log.
Please send me your answers before logging. You do not need to wait for my permission to log your visit. I will contact you if there are any problems with your answers.
