Geocache Description:

For the resolution

Head to the coordinates, facing this limestone rock, where you can observe fossils through the magnifying glass!

Log on to “Found It” and send me your answers via the geocaching messaging system (Message Center) or via mail. Be sure to indicate the name of the cache! I'll analyze your answers and contact you if I have any problems.

> Questions <

1. Describe the rock in front of you (texture, grain size, color(s) present...).

2. Is the Mareuil limestone of volcanic, marine, or metamorphic origin?

3. Are the shells visible through the magnifying glass crystallized, or do only traces of them remain?

To validate the Earth you must attach a photo of yourself to your log (it is not necessary to upload a photo of your face) with the airfield in the background

You don't need to send me your photo by email, I will contact you if there is any problem.

Any log not accompanied by this photo will be deleted.

> Argentina - Geology in the Open Air ! <

Since time immemorial, the inhabitants have exploited the mineral wealth beneath the Argentine plateau. Today, over 50 hectares of underground galleries exist in the surrounding area. Generations of locals have extracted thousands of cubic meters of the famous Mareuil stone—as well as marble-like stone and Fontbelle stone—from the heart of the plateau.

Classified as "first-category workers," these men extracted massive blocks weighing several tons without explosives—using little more than their bare hands, crowbars, sledgehammers, and wedges. Although this status entitled them to extra ration coupons during World War II, the last traditional quarrymen disappeared after the war. This soft stone was, and remains, a popular building material. Today, dozens of people still make a living from its extraction, which is now carried out by modern companies.

> Why are there fossils here? <

The limestone you will walk upon during your hike formed approximately 90 million years ago. It resulted from the accumulation of vast quantities of shell fragments.
During the Late Cretaceous period, oceans covered a much larger portion of the Earth.
A vast lagoon with warm, shallow, turquoise waters once stretched across the area now known as the Mareuil region. Numerous living organisms thrived in this marine environment, which was shielded from open-sea currents by a coral reef.
The accumulation of their shell fragments gave rise to the Mareuil limestone formations.
Subsequent geological changes gradually caused this marine environment to disappear, giving way to a terrestrial landscape subject to significant climatic fluctuations.
