     Early Design and Evolution
  • Original Look: The first signs were simple 2-foot by 2-foot square signs with a white background and black lettering.
  • Octagon Shape: In 1922, the American ass. of State Highway Officials chose the iconic 8-sided octagonal shape so drivers could recognize it from the back or at night. 
  • Yellow Background: From the mid-1920s until 1954, stop signs were changed to yellow with black letters because fade-resistant red materials did not yet exist and yellow offered better nighttime visibility. 
  • Modern Red Design: In 1954, new reflective red materials allowed authorities to standardize the sign to the familiar red background with white letters used today.
