Spöstraff utdelades fram tili mitten av 1860-talet. Då spöstraffen utdelades hade den straffade händerna fast i öglorna uppe på pålen och bröstet mot pålen. Männen hade bar överkropp medan kvinnorna bar ett linne. Som piskor användes videvidjor.
Det berättas att Svartsmarabon Hultin straffades för att han hade stulit spannmål från prosten Frans Petter von Knorring.
Stenen vid pålen är den ursprungliga och platsen i det närmaste den ursprungliga. Denna påle är kopía av spöpålen, uppsatt av Svarismara byalag år 2003.

Whipping was used as a penalty up to the mid 1860's.
When the whipping took place the convict was strapped with his hands in the loops, and his chest turned towards the pole; the men had a naked torso and the women wore a vest. Willowstrips were used as whips.
It is told that a lodger, Hultin from Svartsmara, was punished for stealing corn from Frans Petter von Knorring, the priest of the local parish.
The stone of the base of the pole is original and the pole stands on approximately the same spot as it used to. This replica of a whipping pole was erected by the Svartsmara village community in 2003.
