Geocache Description:

Albedo, apsorpcija Sunčeva zračenja i vapnenački pločnik

Nasuprot tome, površina Pozdrava Suncu djeluje tamno plavo do gotovo crno. Tamnije površine općenito imaju niži albedo i veći udio apsorbiranog Sunčeva zračenja.

Dok promatrate pločnik, pokušajte uočiti i geološku stranu cijelog prizora.

Albedo, absorption of solar radiation and limestone pavement

When you stand at this location, you can observe a strong contrast between the dark glass surface of the Greeting to the Sun and the light-coloured Dalmatian limestone surrounding it. This contrast is not only visually interesting but also allows you to observe several physical properties of geological and construction materials. One of them is albedo, which describes the fraction of incoming solar radiation reflected by a surface. Light-coloured surfaces generally reflect a larger proportion of incoming radiation, while dark surfaces absorb a larger proportion of it. As a result, the same amount of solar radiation can have a different thermal effect on surfaces with different colours and compositions.

The surrounding paving slabs are made of limestone, a sedimentary rock characteristic of large parts of the Dalmatian karst. The main mineral in limestone is calcite, with the chemical composition CaCO3. Dalmatian limestones formed during geological history through the accumulation of carbonate material in marine environments. They may contain fossil remains of organisms with carbonate shells and skeletons, together with fine-grained carbonate mud. Their light colour is mainly related to the abundance of light-coloured carbonate minerals, so such a surface can reflect a significant proportion of visible sunlight.

In contrast, the surface of the Greeting to the Sun appears dark blue to almost black. Dark surfaces generally have a lower albedo and absorb a larger proportion of incoming solar radiation. Part of the absorbed energy is converted into heat, so the surface temperature can become higher than that of a light-coloured surface under otherwise similar conditions. However, the actual temperature is also influenced by air temperature, wind, humidity, the angle of incoming sunlight, the thermal conductivity of the material and the length of exposure to sunlight. Therefore, colour alone cannot determine the exact temperature, but it provides a clear opportunity to observe an important physical principle.

Albedo can be expressed as the ratio of reflected radiation to incoming radiation: α = Ereflected / Eincoming. A value of 0 would mean that a surface reflects no radiation, while a value of 1 would represent complete reflection. Real natural surfaces fall between these limits. Light-coloured limestone generally has a higher albedo than dark surfaces, but the exact value depends on texture, porosity, moisture, surface contamination and the wavelength range being considered. At this location, you can therefore compare two surfaces that differ very clearly in the amount of light they return towards your eyes.

It is important to distinguish the absorption of solar radiation from its conversion into electrical energy. The dark appearance of a material does not automatically mean that it is a photovoltaic cell or that all absorbed energy is converted into electricity. In photovoltaic systems, absorption of light by a semiconductor makes it possible to generate electrical charge and produce electricity, while some of the absorbed energy is nevertheless converted into heat. The Greeting to the Sun uses solar energy within its own system, but the surface you are observing here primarily provides a useful example for comparing the optical and thermal properties of dark and light-coloured surfaces.

As you examine the pavement, also consider the geological side of the scene. The limestone used today in an urban environment represents a material whose origin is connected with ancient marine carbonate environments. Calcite can be represented chemically by the formula CaCO3, and its molar mass is approximately 100.09 g/mol. Because of its carbonate composition, limestone reacts with acids, releasing carbon dioxide. At this single location, you can therefore connect the mineral composition of a rock, its sedimentary origin and the present-day physical behaviour of a stone surface exposed to solar radiation.

Tasks

1 - Compare the amount of light reflected towards your eyes by the light-coloured limestone pavement with the amount reflected by the dark glass surface of the Greeting to the Sun. Which surface appears to have the higher albedo, and why?

2 - On a sunny day, compare the temperature of the light-coloured limestone and the dark glass surface by touch only if it is safe to do so, or by using a non-contact thermometer. Which surface is warmer, and how can the absorption of solar radiation explain the observed difference?

3 - Write the chemical formula of the main mineral in the limestone you are observing and give the mineral's name. What is the relationship between the composition of limestone and its light colour?

4 - Take a photograph of your personal item or yourself together with a visible part of the Greeting to the Sun and the surrounding limestone pavement. Attach the photograph to your log.
