Geocache Description:

Zero-Zero is the junction, point zero center, from which all Chicago districts are measured. This event is located at the intersection of 0 Madison and 0 State Zero-Zero is based on the fact that I love to travel and find compass points built into architecture, along routes, and learn their history for the local area. It is interesting to learn how idstances between locations were defined and measured in worlds before GPS. After reading up on Chicago's point zero location and learning that there are actual artistic compass points in other locations in the city, I wanted to invite others to learning and share knowledge about Chicago's city grid system and some of the history surrounding it. Streets which define this significant Chicago city location due to it being point zero for the entire Chicago's Grid System from where all of the city's entire addresses, streets and avenues are measured from since 1908-1909 after Edward Brennan made strong arguments for the redefining of the previous, failing, communities annexations led to multiple duplications of names and addresses which threatened the postal service to shut down. Brennan's solution was to rename and re-number all of Chicago's city streets. Charles Gary brought in the idea of using cardinal directions for township grid alignment, much of which was not ultimately used but got the ball rolling fpr the grid system. For every mile you go from Madison and State Streets, the numbers go up by 1000, with each increment of 100 equalling a one mile distance. State Street runs north and south while Madison Street runs east and west. Once you learn the grid directions and measurements, wherever you are in the city, you will be able to gauge your distance from Madison and State Streets. Sometime after 1909 a compass was built in the intersection by the City of Chicago, we will take a stroll around State and Madison to see if we can locate it's whereabouts. Join in on the fun with this event, share stories and learn something you might not have considered beforehand. Coffee and bakery items are located nearby :-) I am looking forward to see all of you on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026 at 8:15 a.m.
