Petersfield station was opened in 1859 on the main Portsmouth <-> London line, it also served the Petersfield <-> Midhurst line, AKA "The Midy" from 1864 to 1955 but only the two main up & down lines survive, the Middy branch having been completely removed, there were also a number of sidings on the land now occupied by the supermarket North of the line.
The station itself is believed to be a design of Sir William Tite, and is almost identical to the station building at Godalming about 36km up the line.
The station signal box on the opposite side of Station road was closed for service in 2025, and is a Grade II listed bulding.
