Welcome to Boncester Bridge , or Bonnie Bridge as it is known to the locals. According to the Romans, it was a good place to camp - Bona Castra (there's a hill fort close by!) There's been a ford here for over 300 years, with the original Horse and Hound opening in 1701, and the current one being rebuilt 100 years later. The bridge was built in the 19th Century, when the toll road from the pass at Carter Bar, on the Cheviots was constructed into Hawick - which has always been a market town! Park near the pub, and take care when crossing the bridge - it has no footpath so care is needed with pets and bairns! The road through Bonchester Bridge is set at 20mph, as are all towns, villages and hamlets in the Scottish Borders. the road is also a maximum 50mph - it is popular with motorcyclists but, unfortunately, there has been a recent spate of fatalities, hence the lower speed limit. Please be careful, as the cache is on the endge of a slope, and try to ensure that the cache is covered carefully.
