Geocache Description:

Plutonic Igneous Rock

The Formation of Granite
Granite is a plutonic igneous rock. This means that it formed as a result of the very slow cooling of magma trapped deep within the Earth (the Earth’s crust).
This very gradual cooling (over millions of years) allowed the various components time to grow and crystallize completely. This is why it is described as having a granular texture: the crystals form grains that are all visible to the naked eye and interlocked with one another.

The Composition of Granite
If you look closely at the rock, you can distinguish three main minerals:

Feldspars: These are the opaque white and gray grains. They make up the majority of the rock’s surface and give it its dominant color.

Quartz: These are the small, glassy, grayish, and translucent crystals. Very hard, they form last and fill in the remaining spaces.

Black Mica (Biotite): These are the small, shiny black specks scattered throughout the stone.

The Impact of Polishing
The surface of this slab has undergone a mechanical treatment: polishing. By making the surface perfectly smooth, this human intervention eliminates the stone’s natural porosity. Water can no longer seep into it, which protects the rock from freezing, erosion, and moss growth.

Questions to Validate This EarthCache

To validate this EarthCache, send me your answers—including the cache’s GC code—by email or through the Geocaching messaging system.

You don’t need to wait for my validation to mark it as “Found,” but if there are no answers, your log will be deleted.

Examine the plaque beneath the cross and answer the following:

Q1. When you look very closely at the surface of the plaque, does the rock appear homogeneous (a single color) or heterogeneous (a mixture of several colors)?

Q2. Based on what you learned in the lesson, what is the name of the mineral that corresponds to the small black dots visible on the stone?

Q3. Touch the surface of the slab. Describe how it feels to the touch. What mechanical treatment was this stone subjected to in order to achieve this result?

Q4. You must take a photo of yourself or an object that identifies you, in front of the rock or with the valley in the background, and attach it to your log.
