Geocache Description:

QUESTIONS

Question1 : Definition du litage

Question 2. Observez la zone A , Que voyez vous ? Quelle est l'epaisseur moyenne des strates ?

Question 3.

Question 4.

Question 5.

THE SEDIMENTARY FORMATIONS OF DOMAZAN

Here, at the foot of this parking lot, we can observe a cross-section of the region’s typical rocks, dating from the Astian stage, designated p2b. They correspond to sedimentary formations dating from the Upper Pliocene (approximately 3 to 4 million years ago).

FORMATION

At the beginning of the Pliocene, about 5.33 million years ago, the sea returned and formed the Rhône Gulf, creating a vast ria.

A ria is a narrow, elongated, and relatively deep bay formed by the lower part of a coastal river valley that has been partially or completely flooded by the sea.

The earliest deposits consist of marine clays and marls from the Plaisian period, designated p2a.

Later, during the Astian stage, the ria was gradually filled in by sedimentary deposits from the Rhône and neighboring rivers, which slowly filled the gulf. The seabed then gradually rose.

As the ria became shallower, Astian sands were gradually deposited in the form of strata (litage).

This corresponds to a regression: the sea recedes, but primarily because the sediments advance and fill the gulf.

The phenomenon known as an “offlap”: each more recent rock layer tapers off before reaching the full extent of the underlying, older layer, generally due to marine regression.

STRATIFICATION

In geology, a bed is a thin stratum (ranging from a few centimeters to a few decimeters). It is also called a level, bed, or horizon. If a stratum is less than 2 mm thick, it is referred to as a lamina; if it is several meters thick, it is called a bed.

SEDIMENTARY STRUCTURES

Sedimentary structures form as sand is deposited on the seafloor and exhibit a wide variety of characteristics.

Sediments and sedimentary rocks are identified by bedding, which occurs when layers with different particle sizes are deposited one on top of another.

TYPES OF STRUCTURES

The general macroscopic appearance of sedimentary structures can be distinguished as follows

We can broadly observe different types of structures:

- Oblique stratification is oblique relative to the mean dip (angle of inclination relative to the horizontal) of the stratification surface.

- Cross-bedding is also oblique and, in addition, the layers intersect one another.

- Trough-shaped stratification occurs when the current varies.

QUESTIONS

Question 1: Definition of bedding

Question 2: Observe Area A. What do you see? What is the average thickness of the strata?

Question 3: Are these strata parallel or not? Tell me what the dip is.

Based on the diagram above showing sedimentary features, tell me which category you think these strata belong to.

Question 4: Do you think the current was strong, with waves, or, on the contrary, rather calm? What is your hypothesis?

Question 5: A photo of you with the yellow and white sign in the background is required; it can include your head or not, or simply show your username.
