Winter Texans

The Story Behind the Term “Winter Texans”

The term “Winter Texans” refers to people from colder northern climates who migrate to Texas each winter for its mild weather, low cost of living, and welcoming atmosphere, and who often become integrated into local communities Good Sam Camping Blog+1.

Early origins
The practice of wintering in Texas dates back at least to the 1920s. According to a personal account published by Barbara Pybus in the Texas State Historical Association, her grandparents, Edward and Lucinda Tate, were among the first known “Winter Texans.” In 1925, they joined a real estate tour train in Roosevelt, Oklahoma, traveling to McAllen in the Rio Grande Valley. Impressed by the climate and health benefits, they bought property there to escape Oklahoma winters Good Sam Camping Blog. This early migration set a precedent for the seasonal movement that would later be labeled “Winter Texans.”
