Avant son appellation actuelle, la place était nommée "l'oval des Mouches" !

Elle prit le nom de "place Wagram", du nom d'un village situé à 15 km de Vienne en Autriche, en souvenir de la victoire de Napoléon Ier sur l'armée de l'archiduc Charles, le 6 juillet 1809.
