EC – Le Luberon, héritier des Pyrénées et des Alpes
Description
Question 1
Question 2
Question 3
Question 4

EC - The Luberon, heir to the Pyrenees and the Alps
Description
Welcome to this exceptional viewpoint overlooking South Luberon.
In front of you lies a landscape that tells several tens of millions of years of geological history. Contrary to what one might think, the Luberon is not only linked to the formation of the Alps. Its history is also intimately linked to that of the Pyrenees.
Between -80 and -40 million years ago, the tectonic movements associated with the formation of the Pyrenees cause compressions that fold the geological layers of Provence. Later, around -20 million years ago, the surrection of the Alps reactivated these structures and accentuated the relief.
The Luberon is now a vast anticlinal, i.e. a vault-shaped geological structure whose layers have been folded upwards. Erosion then sculpted the landscape we are currently observing.
From this belvedere, it is possible to observe the general east-west orientation of the Provencal reliefs: Sainte-Victoire, Sainte-Baume, the Costes and the Luberon.
What is a geological fold?
When rock layers are compressed, they can deform without breaking.
Anticlinal: curved fold upwards.
Synclinal: hollow fold downwards.
The alternation of anticlinals and synclinals observable in the Luberon testifies to the powerful tectonic forces that have shaped Provence.
Tasks to be carried out
To save this EarthCache, send your answers through the Geocaching messaging center.
Question 1
Using the panel and the visible landscape:
What is the main orientation of the Provencal reliefs visible from this point of view?
Question 2
The panel indicates two major tectonic phases.
Which mountain range is associated with:
To the first folding phase?
To the second phase of reactivation of the structures?
Question 3
Observe the landscape around you.
In your opinion, what are the visible effects of erosion on the reliefs of the Luberon? Cite at least two personal observations.
Question 4
The sign explains that the Luberon is an anticlinal.
By observing the general relief of the massif, explain in your own words why this structure can be described as anticlinal.
Optional photo
