Geocache Description:

This is a multipoint cache with 5 intermediate points before the cache is reached. Total round trip distance will be about 4 miles. All but the last point can be reached by following well used trails.

4/7/20 - Changes along route have resulted in the need to redo some of the intermediate waypoints.

The best place to begin is from the Sawyer Park parking lot (N 44° 05.186, W 121° 18.649).

Much of the route follows the approximate contact between Awbrey Butte and younger lavas from Newberry Volcano where the Deschutes River has cut a canyon. Awbrey Butte is an old deeply weathered shield volcano which is at least 4 million years old. Along much of the route there are good exposures of the rocks that make up Awbrey Butte. Newberry Volcano south of Bend is a massive shield shaped composite volcano which covers some 500 square miles (an oval shaped area about 30 miles north-south and 20 miles east-west). Over the last half million years, massive basalt flows have erupted from the flanks on the average about every 100,000 years. One of youngest of these massive flows is about 75,000 years old and comes from a buried vent (covered by younger flows) on the north flank of Newberry. This flow extends northward all the way to Redmond and underlies most of Bend east of the Deschutes River, imagine what a flow of that size would do to the area today.
