Geocache Description:

The Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary

This cache is placed thru the work of hwhaler and his geocaching advocacy with the Plainsboro Audubon sancturary, and with the kind permission of Don Freiday, the director of the Scherman-Hoffman sancturary, who became interested in caching thru the Plainsboro hide.

The Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Bernardsville off Hardscrabble road. Take 287 to Exit 30B, the Bernardsville/202 exit, and cross Route 202 to Childs Road, and then bear right onto Hardscrabble Road. You'll see signs both on 287, and at the intersection of Maple/Childs and 202.

The sancturary is open Tuesday thru Saturday 9-5, Sunday from 12-5, and closed Mondays and Holidays. The sanctuary does have a gate which gets locked at closing time, so make sure you've planned your time!

The trails are open 7 days a week to 5pm. For off-day access, park in the lower parking lot on Hardscrabble, just past the main entrance. You can pick up the Dogwood trail from here.

Please note - pets are not allowed.

Park in the lot, and obtain a trail map in the visitor center. You'll head down towards the Dogwood (red) trail, and follow that until you reach the cache site. Please do not bushwack. You'll be able to stay on the Dogwood trail for your entire walk.

The cache container is a 50mm ammo can, which contains a logbook, pencil and pencil sharpener, plus an assortment of the usual geoswag. The pencil sharpener is not a trade item.

When you're done logging your find, please hide it in the same manner (or better) as you found it. After you've re-hid the cache, take your time to enjoy the 276-acres and to stop in at the visitors center.

There are lots of trails in the area, such as Patriots Path. Some of them lead to National Parks managed areas, namely Jockey Hollow. You'll see the signs which delinate the management areas.
