Geocache Description:

THE CHARCOAL OVENS Originally there were four kilns, but only two remain at this time. They were built in the early 1880's Wood was brought down from the nearby mountains and burned in a low oxygen environment, so that it was not all consumed. This left charcoal, which was sold to smelters in Murray and in the west desert. The charcoal was sold by the wagon load, so before it was loaded two long poles were laid in the bottom of the wagon. During the trip the bouncing and jarring of the wagon would settle the charcoal, so just before they arrived at their destinations the teamsters would lift these poles up through the charcoal, fluffing it up and making it look like the smelters were getting a full wagon load. They would then leave the poles by the side of the road, picking them up again on the return trip. The cache is in an old military first aid case, similar to an ammo box but smaller. Can anybody tell me what languages are used on the box? My guess is French and German. *************************************************************************************** Update from geocachers Niki & Nana, who visited this cache on 6/26/14: "This is actually a Belgian Defense first aid box and we know it because we ARE Belgians living in Layton, Utah until the beginning of August 2014. The languages are Flemish (is a kind of Dutch like the Netherlands) and is spoken in the North part of Belgium (that's were we're from) and French (which is spoken in the South part of Belgium. But as you probably know, Belgium also has a 3rh language...a minority speaks German. 'Niki & Nana' speak all 3 languages (and English of course!)!! Greetz from these Belgians and TFTC!!"
