Castle Peak at 6358 ft above sea level is a one time location of an old Fire lookout tower in the Central Black Hills of South Dakota.
Just west of the old mining town of Rochford turn left (South) on Forest Service Road 17, continue on to Forest Service Road 238 at N 44* 06.411' & W 103* 44.267'. Along the way you will go past the old mining town of Myersville at N 44* 06.144' & W 103* 44.267', you can see what remains of the old hotel on your right. Recommned that you don't drive beyond a turn around point in the trail at N 44* 05.404' & W 103* 43.307. From this point the trail is very steep and is covered with very sharp rocks. It is a short hike to the summit where you find what remains of an old fire lookout tower (tower anchors & some building debris) . There is a bonus on top as you will also find a bronze disc Geological Survey Marker. Enjoy the 360* panoramic view of the Black Hills. The cache is an ammo container. Here is a list of contents: Logbook & pencil, Camera (take your picture & leave the camera), small medical dictionary, postcards from Quebec, Swedish coasters, National Guard small mirror, Smiley face ring, US flag lapel pin, Smuf on a skateboard, Toy owl, Toy wind-up fish, Donald Duck, Snow White, Toy frog, Toy bug, Cuff links, Hot wheels car, Bead bracelet and Comb.
