Geocache Description:

Stewiake: Short drive off the Halifax-Truro #102 highway. Popular swimming area on Stewiake River. Excellent canoeing. Cross small stream, then short climb up steep hill. Among the trees.

UPDATED: 2004-Dec11, Replaced the original container and moved / updated the posted co-ordinates by about 10 M. WINTER ACCESSABLE: We placed this in winter, in deep snow, so its accessable in WINTER too. The original cache has been replaced with a small green metal ammo box. In summer bring your swimming trunks because this is a popular place in warm water. Canoeists will also enjoy the slow meandering river. There are a few weekends in summer when a large Bluegrass Festival is nearby. If you exit the 102 Highway at Exit #11, be sure to stop and look at the Mastadon (free) or go into the museum ($$) there for other dinosaur and geology related dispalys. The cache is about 15 minutes from there. In Shubenacadie (Exit 9/10) be sure to visit the Wildlife Park. Its open in Winter from 9am - 3Pm on weekends! This is really the BEST time to see the wildlife. Contents when set include these BRAND NEW still in package items: * "Spy Ear" for aspiring spies! * Mini FM radio / Flashlight(no batteries) * Childs quartz watch * Tire Air pressure guage * Baby Teething Ring * Sewing Kit - Multiple colors of thread * Happy Face Night light * Toy Police Pistol * Wilderness Signal Whistle * Roses * Nibs If you take something, please try to replace it with an item of equivalent value / quality, in order to keep the cache alive. This is my first geocache, and I decided to launch my first TravelBug here too. (NHL Hat-trick Hunter - Hockey Player) 2003Oct27 - Further to the question posed in the logs about Stewiacke's claim to be the half-way point to the North Pole: I happened to be playing with my GPS today when I drove past the water tower, and noticed that on an alternate co-ordinate system map datum (UDS??) that Stewiacke is actually at 50N. I assume that is the midpoint of THAT datum...
