Geocache Description:

Travel back in time with this Ripley County/Doniphan virtual cache.

Ripley County has an interesting past. It was raped and pillaged and burned in the Civil War and, quite frankly, has never recovered. The county is one of the fifty poorest counties in the nation.

A quick synopsis of the county's history is found on a historic marker which are the cache's coordinates. A block south of the courthouse is the Heritage Homestead, and less than 1/2 block east of the courthouse is the county newspaper, The Prospect-News. I'll need a snippet of information from all three locations before you log this cache.

My parents owned The Prospect-News from 1961 to 1995. It is the oldest, continuously operated business in the county.

The Heritage Homestead displays life at the turn of the century. A brick walkway leads from the street to the front steps of the log cabin.

OK, here's what I want from you in your email. From the historic marker at the courthouse: Who was Doniphan's first permanent settler? From The Prospect-News: What year was the newspaper started? From the Heritage Homestead: My parents' names are on the 18th brick with a name on it on the righthand side of the walk as you stroll toward the log cabin. What are their names?

Please email me with the answers. Don't post them in your logs.

Thanks, and welcome to my hometown.
