Geocache Description:

This is a two-part cache. But at the first site, you'll get to log a benchmark for free! The two sites are within walking distance; you shouldn't need to park your car twice.

  • Find benchmark QD1527. This is supposedly located at N44° 3.633'   W121° 18.633'. (We actually found it closer to N44° 3.656'   W121° 18.647'.) We'll use the official numbers as the starting point for the math which follows.
  • Just a few steps away from the benchmark, you should see a historical plaque that tells you when Deschutes County was established, along with some other useful facts.
  • What's the difference between the year in which the county started renting a school and the year when a suspicious fire occurred? Multiply that difference by 26 to get a three-digit number. Add that to the latitude (north-south) minutes.
  • Add the year of the WPA grant to the year that Deschutes County was established. Take the last two digits of that number to get a two-digit number. Subtract that two-digit number from the longitude (east-west) minutes.
  • You now have calculated the coordinates of the actual cache. It's a normal-sized ammo box, but it's not in plain sight.
