Visit a colonial period historic site. Hike an easy trail to the cache. Diabolical Dutch Boy cache is nearby.
Park at the Madren Center and Walker Golf Course
(N 34.40.000 W082.50.626) then hike up the road which is on top of a dike (the Corps calls them "Diversion Dams"). You should be heading west, MOL.
Continue up the road until you see a sign on the right to Fort Rutledge. Take the path and follow your GPS. Afterward you can continue on the path until you reach Fort Rutledge monument at [N 34.40.149 W 082.51.042 MOL].
From the Momument you can travel SSW to the sewage treatment plant and back down the road along the dike to your car.
The monument overlooks a flood plane. The road out is on a dike which keeps Lake Hartwell from flooding that area. (Without the dikes, Frank Howard [football] Field would be under three feet of water).
Very recently the Corps of Engineers, Hartwell is a Corps lake, re-marked its property boundary with lots of bright orange paint. The trail follows this boundary part of the time. The Corps markers also brushed out the boundary. They left the brush where it fell, in the trail. Neither the paint nor the cut brush are a result of this cache.
The cache is in a round container with a 3.75 inch opening. It is 12 inches long. To assure that the contents remains dry please return it to its hide with the opening down. Thanks.
Coordinates are an average of 7 readings. Satellites averaged 3 at the cache. WAAS was available at times. Enjoy the area.
